Set Goals that will lead to Success:
It is often anxiety producing, and therefore discouraging to focus our attention on our goals. This is because we tend to state our goals in a way that makes us feel overwhelmed. Whenever we try to think of our goals, we immediately feel discouraged and abandon pursuig them. Being able to chunk down your dream into small achievable goals is much more fruitful. (Neuro- Linguistic Programming, NLP). Follow the directions below to state short, feasible goals that will lead you to success:
1- State the goal in the positive 2- State what you can do, what lies in your area of control ex: I will eat breakfast everyday so I am not starving at lunch time. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ____________________________ 3- Tell your brain what to do, be specific: How much, place, environment, relationship, time, and space ex: I'll bring an apple to work and eat it before lunch everyday. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ______________
4- Use your senses: Describe how you would feel, what you would see, and hear You can visualize yourself having reached your goal ... ex: I feel my clothes are looser etc... ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ __
5- Chunk the outcomes down to a size that is do-able ex: I chose to relax and center myself before eating ex: I chew my food longer
6- You can also create a choice statement: Ex: Even though I usually binge without feeling my body, I chose to check my stomach each time I want to get a second portion ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ AVOID large overwhelming goals: I lose 100 pounds
7- create sub-goals: What resources will you need in order to make your dream a reality? ex: Assertiveness, confidence, more self-esteem, the ability to look up the information? Then write them as sub-goals Ex: Even though I have never felt confident in my ability to succeed, I chose to surprise myself and feel more confident every day. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________
8- Now ask yourself: Does this goal general fit in with all of your other goals, and values I have? 9- Does parts of you resists the idea of reaching your goal? ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ _______________ 10- How will you know when you have reached you goal? Make sure you are specific in your answer. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ This process should allow you to create several small achievable goals that will lead you to success.
